On January 22, 2026, the PrevRHD Program conducted an awareness lecture for students at Primary School Nicholas in Mekelle, focusing on the prevention and control of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease (RHD).The session introduced students to the link between untreated bacterial throat infections and rheumatic heart disease, explaining how repeated or untreated tonsillitis can lead to rheumatic fever and permanent damage to the heart valves. Students were encouraged to recognize the importance of seeking early medical attention for sore throat and fever and following appropriate treatment.
The lecture also emphasized that rheumatic heart disease is largely preventable through early diagnosis, proper treatment, and increased community awareness. The session aimed to empower students to protect their own health and share the knowledge they gained with their families and communities.
