On January 22, 2026, the PrevRHD Program conducted an awareness-raising lecture for students from Ayder and Diamond High Schools in Mekelle. The session focused on increasing students' understanding of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, including their causes, warning signs, prevention, and the importance of early treatment.
Students learned about the connection between untreated or inadequately treated throat infections, acute rheumatic fever, and permanent heart valve damage. The session emphasized the importance of seeking timely medical care for suspected throat infections and following appropriate treatment to prevent serious complications.
The lecture also highlighted the long-term health and financial burden of rheumatic heart disease and encouraged students to share the information with their families and communities. Through such school-based awareness activities, the PrevRHD Program aims to empower young people to become active participants in the prevention of this largely preventable disease.
